It is well known that operating in foreign countries requires understanding the laws and business customs that may differ dramatically from the home country. Where companies tend to make mistakes is that they do not know the degree to which accomodations should be made. Try to completely export your home modi operandi and you may find that foreign employees and customers see the business as awkward and ultimately ineffective. On the other hand, allowing your foreign business to be completely localized may mean that the core advantages and proven business practices developed and honed over time are not used effectively to achieve desired results. With either extreme, effective communications can become a major challenge often leading to frustrations at home and abroad. Joint ventures and cooperative marketing arrangements can also create similar problems where a lack of understanding between companies reduces the chances for success and mutual gains. While global markets are experiencing severe contraction, the interconnectedness of markets is not likely to dramatically change. In fact, the current market realignments are providing opportunities to source, supply, build and/or acquire services, assets and companies at prices not seen for a decade. Determining how best to move in this environment given tight capital, requires proper and practical due diligence that quantifies the potential upside, risks and timing. Agilis has experience in the fields of foreign opportunity identification, capital raising, startup and strategy in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific.
